The skipper/owner of a Corby 25 faced challenges with a corroding, heavy yacht rudder and stock that absorbed water. To enhance performance and reliability, a lightweight, cost-effective replacement was needed within a limited timeframe.
We selected titanium for the stock and carbon fiber for the rudder blade to meet these requirements.
Titanium Stock: Chosen for its strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, and durability, ensuring it withstands the marine environment while remaining lightweight.
Carbon Blade: Selected for its lightweight and high stiffness, contributing to better hydrodynamic performance and allowing for precise shaping to optimize efficiency.
The key design factors included: Structurally engineered stock while maintaining a lightweight profile; Minor shape modifications improved hydrodynamic efficiency; Whilst designed for easy production within the timeframe and budget constraints.
The project resulted in a new rudder weighing around half as much as the original, improving the Corby 25's performance and ensuring readiness for the racing season. The titanium and carbon fiber combination provided a reliable, efficient solution that enhanced the boat's competitive edge.
